Nursing Schools in Delaware
Delaware is a tiny state, but those who choose to enter nursing careers here will have big opportunities in the First State. While the unemployment rate sits close to the national average here, nurses still remain high in demand due to Delaware's persistent nursing shortage. State studies have shown the nursing shortage is most pronounced in hospitals and long-term care facilities. However, some potential nursing students may have trouble getting into nursing programs here because there have not historically been enough nursing faculty to teach the growing number of incoming nursing students. However, those who do graduate from such programs generally do not have to wait long before finding gainful employment. Nurses who live in Delaware can enjoy the scenic coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay, which are great for coastal kayaking and sailing. Forests, rivers, parks and campgrounds in the state also make it a great place for outdoor recreation.
Qualified nurses are needed in Delaware's hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, doctor's offices, and home health care agencies. The most in-demand nursing jobs in Delaware are concentrated in and around the more heavily populated areas, such as Wilmington, Newark and Dover. Some of the largest and best-known employers of registered nurses in Delaware include: the Christiana Care Health System, Bayhealth Medical Center and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Those who want to become nurses in the state can get information about state licensure through the Delaware State Board of Nursing, and search recognized nursing programs using the Board's website. The Delaware Nurses Association is the professional organization that represents the state's nurses, and the association maintains a website where RNs here can search for jobs, find continuing education opportunities and keep up to date on issues relevant to Delaware's nurses.
