A Clean House Is a Healthy One
May 2nd, 2009
If you haven’t seen the floor of your room since you moved in, your kitchen is a mess and your place is generally in a disarray, you’re not only making your home a stressful, unpleasant place to be but also increasing your risk of getting sick or developing health problems. While many college students put cleaning at the bottom of their lists of things to do, it’s an important part of maintaining your health that shouldn’t be ignored. Still not convinced? Consider these points:
First, if you have allergies, an unclean apartment can wreck havoc on them. Excess dust and pollen that hangs around your place can have you sneezing, coughing and rubbing your eyes in no time. Even worse, it can help trigger painful sinus infections that could sideline you from work and school for days.
Additionally, not cleaning out your fridge, scrubbing your shower, or doing the dishes also has a pretty big downfall. All of these things can develop mold. Mold and mildew and aggravate asthma and allergies and can make even those without these additional health problems sick. Certain types of mold can be incredibly dangerous to inhale, so it’s best to prevent the development of these substances from the get-go.
Dirt, grime and above all food particles can attract some unwelcome guests into your home as well. Bugs and mice would love to clean up after your mess if you won’t. Not only are these visitors gross, but they can also bring diseases into your home and their presence can aid in making you sick, especially if you have a preexisting condition or a weakened immune system.
Finally, an unclean places is a haven for germs, bacteria and viruses that can make you sick. Why create a home for things you want to avoid? Even if you and your roomie are healthy, you can bring in germs from outdoors that can incubate and reproduce on the surfaces in your place. While you don’t have to fumigate, you do need to keep things clean to avoid illness.
Is cleaning your apartment or dorm room often a pain? Well it certainly isn’t fun, but it’s a lot more fun than getting sick, missing classes, a generally feeling awful. So keeping a clean home is a great ideas if you want to avoid illness and take preventative measures to make sure you stay healthy.
