Joint program prepares students for healthcare changes
November 12th, 2010
Major changes in the healthcare industry are expected over the coming years, and a new joint nursing program is intended to prepare students for them.
The Aurora Sentinel reports that the Community College of Aurora (CCA) and the University of Colorado School of Nursing’s (UCSN) Integrated Pathway to Baccalaureate Nursing Education program allows nursing students to be simultaneously admitted to both institutions.
Students can earn both an associate of general studies and a bachelor of science in nursing degree in less than four years, as they will be able to earn 126 credits at both campuses.
“There’s nothing wrong with the associate degree in nursing, [but] we just want to be able to lead them beyond that to the next step,” said Nancy Case, dean of CCA’s health sciences division.
The two-level program will equip aspiring nurses with increased academic credentials.
Officials behind the program explain that many employers require applicants to have at least a bachelor’s degree for nursing positions.
Nurses are the largest workforce segment in the healthcare industry. A recent report by the Institute of Medicine recommended that nurses receive better training and pursue higher education.
