If ever there were a prime symbol of Southwestern culture, New Mexico is it. Southwestern culture reflects a combination of Hispanic, Mexican, Native American, and American heritage, which undeniably reflects the characteristics of the residents living in the Land of Enchantment. Bordering the country of Mexico as well as boasting one of the highest concentrations of Native Americans after Alaska and Oklahoma, New Mexico possesses a strong mixed cultural heritage that is unique to the state. Residents typically take great pride in the Southwestern flair of New Mexico, as evidenced in the plethora of ethnic and hybrid cuisines, art, even languages. Those living here enjoy a generally slower-paced way of life, though the state is not without bustling metropolitan hotspots.
Oil and gas production is the driving force behind the state's economy, leading the nation in crude oil and natural gas supply. However, the Land of Enchantment is about more than just energy resources. New Mexico's health care industry is holding steady as well, and those looking to work in nursing will find the best local opportunities in populous metropolitan areas like in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, as well as in some outlying areas like Eastern New Mexico. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that when there are more residents, there will inevitably be a greater need for health care practitioners. To become a registered nurse (RN) in New Mexico, you must first earn a diploma, associate, or bachelor's degree from an approved nursing program. Then, you must also successfully complete the NCLEX-RN examination to obtain a nursing license. RNs hoping to gain licensure in the state must also provide proof of English competency as well as fingerprint cards for a full criminal background check. In addition, New Mexico is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which allows for nurses licensed in New Mexico to legally practice in other participating states. As of October 2009, 22 states are participating in the NLC.
